Daily Habits Between Cleanings

Polished teeth in a dental mirror after cleaning — Teeth Cleaning in Greenlea and Otten, Clearwater

So between appointments the sink routine is what we count on. Teeth Cleaning in Greenlea and Otten, Clearwater, Florida means a set routine at home. Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, about two minutes each time. Then clean between the teeth once a day with floss or a small interdental brush. When a sweet or acidic drink stays in the mouth, enamel sits under acid until saliva buffers it.

Hot, humid afternoons in Greenlea and Otten, Clearwater, Florida make dry mouth more common. Because yards and neighborhood parks stay warm, time outside runs long, and sipping follows. So plain water is the drink we want in that cup. Sports drinks and sweet tea put acid back on the teeth with every sip. After an acidic drink, rinse with water. Then wait about 30 minutes before brushing, since enamel is softer right after acid.

We walk through brush angle and floss during the cleaning. Use a soft brush and a pea-sized dab of fluoride toothpaste. Spit after brushing, and skip a heavy water rinse, so the fluoride stays on the enamel. For example, the gumline and the back molars are easy to miss on a rushed morning. Our notes on proper brushing and flossing lay out the sequence we use. Because a partly erupted wisdom tooth can trap food, a brush often cannot reach it. Then we sort out whether removing a wisdom tooth belongs in the plan.

What the Cleaning Visit Includes

Hygienist scaling tartar along the lower gumline during cleaning

A routine adult cleaning is usually one visit. It often takes about 45 to 60 minutes, and that window usually includes the exam. We scale off tartar a brush cannot lift, then polish the tooth surfaces. After that we check the gums and look for spots that bleed. When films are due, digital x-rays show decay between teeth that a mirror can miss.

When tartar sits under the gumline, we move to periodontal scaling and root planing. That work cleans root surfaces a routine polishing does not reach. We often split the mouth across one or two visits. After scaling, cold sensitivity commonly lasts a few days to a couple of weeks. A pocket recheck often happens about 4 to 6 weeks later. Laser periodontal therapy is another option for infected gum tissue.

What to Ask Before You Hire

Before a cleaning is booked, a few questions show whether the office fits the mouth. We are a family practice led by Dr. Theresa Rodeghero, a DMD. Dr. Grace Garcia and Dr. Vinh Dang practice with her. Our downtown Clearwater office serves homes in Greenlea and Otten, Clearwater, Florida.

  • Ask how often they want you back if dry mouth or heavy tartar continues. Often that is every 3 to 4 months while it lasts.
  • Check if the visit includes an exam, or only a polish.
  • If gums are puffy, ask whether scaling and root planing is the next step, and whether they split it into two visits.
  • Get the toothpaste they want used at night, plus the eating wait after fluoride varnish. Often that wait is about 30 minutes, or what the label says.

Bring the names of medicines and the toothpaste used at night. Some medicines dry the mouth, and that changes the recall we suggest. Bleeding during flossing can mean the gums need scaling.

Recall, Humidity, and the Next Visit

Most low-risk adults stay on dental exams and cleanings every six months. Because dry mouth raises cavity risk, we often shorten recall to every 3 to 4 months. That shorter spacing holds while the dryness continues. Hot months in Greenlea and Otten, Clearwater, Florida are a common time for that change. When air conditioning runs for hours, sweet drinks can replace water in the cup. The same dry-mouth pattern shows up elsewhere in Pinellas County.

After a cleaning, tenderness and cold sensitivity often last about 1 to 3 days. If we place fluoride varnish, wait about 30 minutes before eating, or follow the label. Then brush gently that night with a soft brush. So water is the better sip that evening. We want a look if bleeding continues past a few days.

Hardened tartar needs a scaler at the visit, since a brush cannot lift it. Our teeth cleaning visits cover the scale and the polish, plus an exam when we include one. We can add an oral cancer screening when the exam calls for it. We always recommend you double-check with your provider which option makes sense for you. If decay shows up between cleanings, a composite filling often lasts about 5 to 10 years.
