Creating Beautiful, Healthy Smiles

Skipping a shorter cleaning when the mouth stays dry lets plaque harden into tartar. Acid sits on enamel longer, and the gums get sore. Teeth Cleaning in Tampa still starts from the usual six-month gap for a low-risk mouth. Because heat and air conditioning run most of the year here, dryness is common. A dry mouth often needs a cleaning every three to four months while that dryness continues.

What dryness does between cleanings

Saliva normally washes food off the teeth and buffers acid. When the mouth stays dry, that wash slows down. Outdoor heat in Tampa keeps most days in cooled rooms. Then the air from the vents dries the lips and the tongue. The same dry indoor air shows up across Hillsborough County. Plaque turns sticky. It collects faster along the gumline and between the back teeth.

Then the film hardens into tartar if it sits. A toothbrush cannot scrape tartar off. So the gap between cleanings matters more in a dry mouth. Cavities can start along the gumline, where the enamel is thin. The gums can swell and bleed when a brush touches them. After a full year with a dry mouth, that tartar has a long head start. But a six-month gap can also fall short when tartar returns early.

How we clean the teeth

A routine adult cleaning is usually one visit. It often takes about 45 to 60 minutes, and that time includes the exam. We start by looking at the gums and the inside of the cheeks. Dry tissue looks dull. Saliva may look thick or stringy. Then we check for tartar and for soft spots in the enamel. When pockets need measuring, we do that before scaling starts.

Scaling lifts tartar above the gumline. When it is safe, we also clean a little below the gumline. We use a hand scaler, an ultrasonic tip, or both. After the tartar is gone, we polish so the enamel feels smooth. Then floss clears the contacts a brush misses. Fluoride varnish is an option when the enamel looks weak or the mouth stays dry. After we place varnish, food and drink usually wait about 30 minutes, or as the label directs.

The same visit can include an oral cancer screening when the exam calls for it. When we need to see between the teeth, we add digital x-rays. A panoramic film is another option when the roots need a wider look. Heavy tartar with bleeding gums can move the work to periodontal scaling and root planing. That deeper cleaning is often one or two visits. A cavity usually means a separate composite filling visit.

Choosing six months or a shorter gap

Most low-risk adults do well with a cleaning every six months. Because saliva has to do its share between visits, that gap is the low-risk plan. When dryness continues, the usual recall often shortens to every three to four months. The same shorter gap is common while inflammation or heavy tartar continues. After scaling and root planing, periodontal maintenance often follows that three-to-four-month rhythm.

Tartar back well before six months is one sign the gap is too long. Bleeding with ordinary brushing is another. New cavities along the gumline point the same way. So medicines that cut saliva belong in the decision too. For example, sticky saliva by midday in a cooled Tampa room is a reason to shorten the gap. Home care still carries the days in between. Brushing and flossing the right way covers the daily steps that keep the film thin. So the next cleaning has less tartar to lift.

When the gums stay puffy, a routine cleaning may not reach the root surfaces. We measure pockets before any polish. How gum disease starts is why those numbers matter. When pockets are present, scaling and root planing is the usual next step. Laser periodontal therapy is available here when that approach fits the case.

Time on the schedule and the days after

Plan on one visit for a routine cleaning. But periodontal scaling can take longer. We sometimes split that work by areas of the mouth. The office sits in Clearwater, a drive across the bay from Tampa. So leave a little margin around the appointment. Dr. Theresa Rodeghero, a DMD, leads this family practice, and the team has practiced dentistry for decades.

The kind of work sets the cost. A routine cleaning and periodontal scaling are different visits. Insurance plans often sort them apart. Extra films or varnish can change what is planned. Because films and varnish change the visit, we go over the plan before treatment starts.

Tenderness and cold sensitivity often last about one to three days after a cleaning. The gums can feel sore if they were inflamed. A soft brush and lukewarm water usually get through those days. We look again if sensitivity lasts past a few days. Then we check again if bleeding gets worse or a tooth stays sharp to cold.

Our routine teeth cleaning care includes the shorter recall when dryness does not let up. An exam done with the cleaning is where we decide if six months still fits. The mouth and body connection matters when gums bleed in a dry mouth. But a low-risk recall can move back toward six months once saliva is steady and the gums stay calm. We always recommend you double-check with your provider which option makes sense for you. Until then, a three-to-four-month gap is the usual plan while dryness continues.
