How often to book a cleaning

Polished teeth after a finished cleaning, Teeth Cleaning in Seville, Clearwater

Six months is the usual gap for a healthy, low-risk mouth. Teeth Cleaning in Seville, Clearwater changes in the humid season, when air-conditioning leaves the mouth dry. Plaque gets more time to sit in that dry spell. So most low-risk adults book twice a year. When inflammation or heavy tartar keeps coming back, the gap often shortens to every three or four months. Ongoing dry mouth usually takes that same shorter recall.

A routine adult cleaning is usually one visit. It often runs about 45 to 60 minutes, and that window usually includes the exam. We look at the gums, clear plaque and tartar above the gumline, and polish. Then fluoride varnish may go on, if it fits the case. After varnish, eating usually waits about 30 minutes, or as the product label directs.

When a shorter recall makes sense

Hygienist scaling tartar along a lower molar during cleaning — Teeth Cleaning in Seville, Clearwater

Home air-conditioning runs for long stretches in Seville, Clearwater. Indoor air dries out, and a dry mouth gives plaque more time on the teeth. Because of that, six months is often too long while dry mouth continues. We usually move the recall sooner until saliva is steadier and tartar slows.

The same warm season shows up elsewhere in Pinellas County. But the booking follows what we find at the exam. Heavy tartar or bleeding gums also shorten the recall, often into a shorter range. After scaling and root planing, periodontal maintenance is often on a shorter schedule as well. Timing varies from person to person, so our office will confirm what to expect in your case.

We check pocket depths, bleeding, and how fast tartar returns. For example, calm gums with light tartar can stay on six months. Thick tartar that returns within a season usually puts the recall at three to four months.

What the cleaning visit includes

Fluoride varnish painted onto polished front teeth

We start by looking at the gums and the teeth. We note anything that needs more than a polish. When the visit is a routine adult cleaning, the exam usually shares that same appointment. We take bitewing x-rays on a rotating schedule. So the cleaning itself is the scale and the polish. Tartar under the gumline needs scaling and root planing on its own plan.

Then our page on dental exams and cleanings lays out how that exam pairs with the cleaning. If pockets are deep, scaling and root planing is the usual next step. It’s often one or two visits, sometimes split by area of the mouth. After that care, we book periodontal maintenance on the shorter cycle.

Between visits, brushing and flossing do most of the plaque control. Our notes on how to brush and floss cover the daily steps. Brush twice a day, and clean between the teeth once a day. That’s what we count on between bookings.

What to ask before you hire

  • How often they want the next cleaning, and what in the gums or saliva set that number
  • Whether x-rays and the exam share the chair time or get booked on another day
  • What they do when tartar sits under the gumline, since a polish stops at the gum edge
  • Who holds the scaler, and whether a dentist checks the mouth at that same visit

You can review our teeth cleaning work and see how we set up family visits. When we need a closer view, digital x-rays or an intra-oral camera can join the exam. We’ll say whether oral cancer screening belongs in that visit.

After the cleaning

Tenderness and cold sensitivity often last about one to three days. Then it usually eases. When fluoride varnish goes on, wait about 30 minutes before eating, or follow the product label.

The fee follows the type of visit. A routine cleaning and periodontal maintenance are different services. Because the exam sets the service, the service sets the fee. When air-conditioning runs for months in Seville, Clearwater, we check for dry mouth at the recall visit. That dry spell can move the recall from six months to three or four.

Dr. Theresa Rodeghero, DMD, leads our family practice from downtown Clearwater, with Dr. Grace Garcia and Dr. Vinh Dang. We always recommend you double-check with your provider which option makes sense for you. A shorter gap stays in place while dry mouth or heavy tartar continues. Six months is the usual return when pockets stay stable and new tartar stays light.
