Largo Florida Veneers – Whitening Differences and Care

Clearwater Family Dental...

Creating Beautiful, Healthy Smiles

A shell that sits too thick can chip at the edge. So a shell over a soft spot can fail the same way. Then the front teeth meet wrong on every chew. Veneers in Largo suit front teeth that are chipped, worn, or uneven in color. Enough enamel has to remain, and the gums need to be healthy. But we check the bite and the tooth before any prep. When we use porcelain, we shape a thin outer layer and record the teeth. We bond the shells at a later appointment. Because a small chip and a worn tooth differ, the dentist looks at your case first.

Veneers in Largo and the Teeth They Fit

A close look at the finish — Veneers in Largo

We start with an exam. Digital x-rays show decay under the enamel. An intra-oral camera shows old fillings and the gum line up close. When a front tooth is dark after a root canal, a thin shell may be the wrong cover. A large filling can leave too little tooth for a shell to grip. Then porcelain crowns for weak teeth may hold that tooth together better. Because the bite has to stay stable, heavy grinding can rule a thin shell out. We may plan a night guard. Or we may choose a stronger restoration. When a tooth is turned, we may talk about Clear Correct orthodontics before a shell.

Color on sound enamel is a different job. Tooth whitening can lift stains on sound enamel. Whitening does not rebuild a chipped corner. Tooth-colored composite repairs can rebuild a small corner and remove less enamel. After that comparison, we write which teeth get which fix. Dr. Theresa Rodeghero, DMD, leads our Clearwater practice with a holistic focus. So we talk about how much tooth a prep would take. In Largo, Florida, the drive to our office is usually short. But the bonding appointment runs longer than a cleaning, so leave time for it.

The same limits apply to Veneers in Largo when the edges have worn flat from grinding over many years. We need enamel for the bond. If the wear sits mostly on back teeth, a porcelain onlay can cover the chewing surface. A front shell covers the front face of a tooth.

Prep, Lab Time and Bonding for Veneers in Largo

The finished job, seen in full

Bonding day for Veneers in Largo is the longer appointment. But we don’t start there. When gum care or a filling has to come first, we finish that work before any shell. After that, whitening can still come first when neighboring teeth should be lighter. Dr. Grace Garcia and Dr. Vinh Dang work these exams with Dr. Theresa. One of us looks at your case before any prep.

Here is the order for a standard porcelain case.

  1. We examine the teeth and the bite, then we record photos and digital x-rays.
  2. When the tooth needs prep, we numb it, remove a thin enamel layer, and scan.
  3. We try the shells in, bond them while the field stays dry, and check the bite.

Some teeth already have a shape that needs little enamel removed. A darker corner can mean we take more enamel off. A thick edge can too, so the shell stays in line with the tooth. After the records appointment, a temporary cover may protect the teeth while the lab makes the porcelain. So lab time varies with the case. For example, we use the try-in to check shape and shade before the cement sets for good. If the color is off, we send the shell back. We won’t bond a shade that looks wrong in the smile.

Saliva under the cement can weaken the seal. So we keep the tooth dry, set the resin cement, and cure it. Then we check that the teeth meet evenly. After that, we adjust a high spot before you leave the chair. Cold sensitivity can show up after prep. It may settle as the tooth calms. If the cold pain stays strong, we look at the bite and the nerve. So the tooth needs another look. When a tooth is too broken down for a shell, a full cap is the stronger choice. A crown made in one day is one option when the tooth needs a full cap.

Daily Care After Veneers in Largo

The work under way

Home care after Veneers in Largo tracks care for the other teeth, with a few hard limits. Porcelain will not change color if you whiten later. So we set the shade only after whitening. After bonding, brush twice a day and floss at the gum line. The strokes we want are on our page about brushing and flossing the right way. Biting hard ice can chip a new edge, and so can tearing a package with your teeth. A night guard can help when you grind in your sleep. We’ll say so if the wear pattern shows that.

Our notes on the porcelain veneers we place go further into materials and the bonding steps. But porcelain can still chip later at an edge. A bond can loosen if saliva got under the seal, or if the bite stays high. If an edge catches floss, or the bite feels high days later, the shell needs a check. A small chip may only need smoothing. That depends on the dentist looking at the tooth. A larger break may need a new shell. A crack in the tooth underneath moves the plan toward a crown.

We always recommend you double-check with your provider which option makes sense for you.
