CLEARWATER FAMILY DENTAL

Downtown, Clearwater Florida Teeth Whitening – Sun Shade

Clearwater Family Dental...

Creating Beautiful, Healthy Smiles

A shade chosen only under the operatory light often looks fine in the chair. Then it looks harsh outside. Teeth Whitening in Downtown, Clearwater has to hold up in strong Gulf sun along the harbor. But a too-white shade can look chalky there. So we aim for the brightness that still looks like a tooth outdoors in Downtown, Clearwater, Florida.

We set that shade against harbor light. Because the waterfront light is hard and bright, we stop before the whitest tab.

Shade choice for harbor light

Even whitened smile in bright window light — Teeth Whitening in Downtown, Clearwater

The miss usually shows on the front teeth. A shade that seemed close indoors can look a step lighter in open sun. Composite fillings and crowns keep their own color. Veneers do the same. So the contrast gets louder outside, where the light is stronger. White spots can also look stronger for a few days after whitening. Then they usually settle. So we wait before we call the shade finished.

Harbor walks put the smile in that light for much of the day. After that, the same teeth sit in softer indoor light. We plan one shade for both. Usually that means one or two steps lighter than the start. So we stop before the end of the guide.

How we set the shade

Shade samples held beside front teeth in bright clinical light

Dr. Theresa Rodeghero leads the team, including Dr. Grace Garcia and Dr. Vinh Dang. The first visit looks at stain, tartar, cracks, and any fillings or crowns in the smile. Whitening gel lightens natural enamel. Because tartar will not bleach, a cleaning often comes first. Dental exams and cleanings sit in that same plan when buildup is the real issue.

Then we record the current shade under the operatory light. After that, we check it again in brighter light, near a window when the room allows. The target still has some of the tooth’s own warmth. But in bright sun, a flat bright white can look too stark.

  1. Check the smile, the gums, and any restorations before any gel.
  2. Record the starting shade in room light and in brighter light.
  3. Pick a target a limited step lighter, and note teeth that will not change.
  4. Whiten in the chair, often about 60 to 90 minutes, or with home trays over 1 to 2 weeks.
  5. Recheck the shade in bright light after the early white-spot contrast has settled.

The whitening visit

Whitening gel on front teeth midway through an in-office visit

So in-office whitening is the shorter path. Home trays leave room to pause when the outdoor shade looks right. After either path, sensitivity is common. It often lasts a few hours to a few days. When gel sits on the tissue too long, gum irritation can show up.

A crown or veneer in the front will not lighten with the gel. So bleaching the neighbors can make that restoration look dark in harbor sun. We can match a new veneer or crown to the whitened teeth. A milder bleach can also keep the color gap smaller. Professional tooth whitening covers the bleaching side of that choice.

A sore or impacted back tooth is a different job. When that tooth needs to come out, wisdom tooth removal comes first, and elective shade work waits. We also replace composite fillings when an old filling color is what shows in the sun. Another round of gel leaves that filling the same color.

After the shade is set

Staining foods and drinks usually wait about 24 to 48 hours. Because enamel takes color more readily then, a dark drink in that window can dull the shade. Sensitivity often eases within a few days. When it lingers, we look again before any further gel.

A smile out on a harbor walk gets the full sun. Elsewhere in Pinellas County the sun runs strong as well. So along the open water in Downtown, Clearwater, the test is stricter. The chair visit and the take-home option are both part of our teeth whitening work.

Results often stay noticeable for about 6 months to 2 years before a touch-up. For example, coffee and tea can shorten that window. We always recommend you double-check with your provider which option makes sense for you. Elective whitening is commonly postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding. We sort that timing, and the gel plan, before treatment starts.
