Creating Beautiful, Healthy Smiles

The useful window opens after decay shows up and before treatment day is set. Solea in Clearwater is how we handle many of those teeth without a needle at the start. We can often prep the cavity and skip anesthetic. Bleeding stays low when a little gum tissue is in the way. A dentist here looks at the case first. But depth still decides whether the laser is the right tool.

We work in Clearwater, Florida, as a family practice led by Dr. Theresa Rodeghero, DMD. So the aim is a repair that holds, with as little anesthetic as the tooth allows. The Solea unit is a carbon dioxide laser. Because water and tooth mineral take up that wavelength, the beam can remove decay without a spinning bur. When the cavity is shallow, we often work without a shot. But a deep spot near the nerve still gets anesthetic. Then the filling steps stay the same either way.

Early decay is where this approach fits. For example, a small groove cavity can often be cleared with the laser. Then we close it with composite in that same appointment. A wide cavity with thin walls may hold up better as one-day crown work. We look at the remaining enamel before we choose. When the surface is still intact and the risk of waiting stays low, watching is reasonable.

Diagnosis comes before we switch the beam on. We check the tooth, the bite, and the images in the chart. Digital X-rays or the intra-oral camera can join that look. Then we say whether the laser fits that tooth. We also say whether a shot is wiser. But sometimes the tooth needs more than a filling.

For a straightforward cavity, Solea in Clearwater often means the bur stays in reserve. We still keep a handpiece ready. Enamel edges and a tight contact sometimes need a bur for a clean finish. Then the laser takes the decay out when the case suits it. When the tooth gets sensitive during the work, we stop and numb. We add anesthetic when the tooth needs it.

The work usually runs in this order:

  1. Review the tooth, the images, and whether numbing belongs in the plan.
  2. Isolate the area, then remove decay with the beam while checking the cavity floor.
  3. Place a composite filling, adjust the bite, and polish.
  4. Cover first-day home care, including which foods to keep off that side.

Time depends on the tooth. So most small fillings finish in one appointment. A single surface often takes well under an hour, as a general range. After a multi-surface repair, or one that still needs a shot, the time runs longer. We name a time range only after the exam. A small gum trim around a filling margin is usually quick.

Solea sits inside the laser dentistry we offer. When another wavelength fits better, we use Fotona laser treatment instead. Gum disease with its own protocol is a separate plan. Fillings without numbing are the cases where we skip the shot. After the prep, mercury-free composite is what we place for a metal-free repair.

A composite filling can take chewing force once we cure it, at the end of the procedure. Bite tenderness for a few days is still common. So is a short run of cold sensitivity. Most people notice that fade within a few days. But some teeth stay reactive longer. After a look at the case, the dentist will say what applies. Pain that builds needs another look. But a sharp pain on biting needs a look too.

Soft tissue follows a different course. Because the beam seals small vessels as it cuts, bleeding during a minor gum trim is usually light. The spot can stay sore for several days. After that, a softer diet on that side helps. A small soft-tissue area often settles over one to two weeks. That range is general. When infection or a medical condition is in play, the timeline can stretch. The dentist will say which timeline fits.

A numb lip is harder to manage in Clearwater afternoon heat. The same issue shows up on a drive back downtown. Because some drives start elsewhere in Pinellas County, the numb window lasts through more of the trip home. When anesthetic is skipped, there’s no numb cheek to guard. A hot drink is easier to judge when the lip has normal feeling. When we do numb, feeling usually returns over a few hours. The meal and the drive need that window in the plan.

Solea in Clearwater Home Care for the First Days

Brush gently the first night if we touched the gum. Then floss the next day unless the plan says to wait. When the tooth feels tender, skip very hard food on that side for a day or two. A mild ache can happen. Over-the-counter pain relief is often enough if a physician has already cleared those medicines. But we won’t add a new drug on dental advice alone. When the bite feels high, that is a contact we can adjust.

Solea in Clearwater doesn’t come with a success rate we’ll quote. What it costs depends on the procedure the tooth needs. So a small filling and a crown sit on different fees. We write the plan out line by line before treatment starts. Because insurance rules differ, we don’t guess coverage. The tooth and daily care still decide how the repair holds up. Medical history matters too, especially medicines that affect bleeding.

More detail on the unit itself is on our page about Solea laser technology. Use that page for the equipment background. We decide the fit after the exam and the images. Dr. Theresa Rodeghero leads the practice with a holistic focus. Dr. Grace Garcia and Dr. Vinh Dang work with her. Any of them can review the plan.

Some teeth need a different treatment. When a nerve is already inflamed, root canal therapy may be the next step. Wisdom teeth extractions stay on an oral surgery plan. Anesthetic is part of that plan when the work requires it. For example, ozone dentistry can join a conservative plan on a separate problem. We add ozone only when it fits that tooth. A deep cavity may need a bur and anesthetic. We write a surgical plan on its own.
